As a customer, you rely on Batteries Plus to provide you with replacement batteries for your car, boat and cell phone, so why not your watch? When your timepiece stops ticking, head down to your nearest Batteries Plus. We carry a wide selection of batteries for both digital and analog watches and offer convenient battery replacement service.

What Kind of Battery Does my Watch Need?

The type of battery your watch requires depends on its build, design and size, although the majority of watches run on either silver oxide cell or lithium coin cell batteries. Silver oxide batteries are available in both low drain and high drain types. Low drain batteries are engineered for basic watches with low to moderate power requirements, while high drain batteries are used for more power-hungry watches with special functions such as backlighting, chronometers and alarms.

Lithium cell batteries are most commonly found in large sport and digital watches with a number of features. A lithium cell battery is typically the size of a nickel or larger and very thin. Just like with silver oxide batteries, lithium are available in low drain (Low Rate BR Carbon Monofluoride) and high drain (High Rate CR Manganese Dioxide) varieties.

Understanding Watch Battery Sizes

Watch battery sizes are designated by a series of numbers such as 1216 or 2032. These numbers are an abbreviation of the diameter and height of the battery itself in millimeters, with the first two numbers referring to diameter and the last two referencing height. For example, a 2032 watch battery will have a diameter of 20mm and a height of 3.2mm.

Honestly though, the easiest way to find the right battery is to simply read the number off of your old battery or find it listed in your watch’s user manual.

Can I replace my watch battery myself?
