What is a Button Cell Battery?
Key fobs and other car remotes run on button cell batteries. Button cell batteries are small round batteries used in a variety of common devices. Because of their distinct shape and size, they’re also known as coin cell batteries. Button or coin cell batteries are used to power a number of everyday gadgets, including hearing aids, watches, thermometers, pocket calculators and a variety of games and toys.
How Do I Know What Battery My Key Fob Needs?
One convenient thing about button cell batteries is that they have an identification number printed right on the top. This number, which is usually three to four digits long, will identify the type of battery you’re looking for. The button cell most commonly used in key fobs is the CR2032. Other commonly used button cells include: CR2450, CR2025, CR1616 and CR2016.
If for some reason you can’t find the number on your old battery, you can usually find what type of battery your fob needs in your vehicle owner’s manual. Or, you can stop by your nearest Batteries Plus and one of our experts will help you find the correct battery for your needs.

Most key fob batteries will last between three and four years, although some Smart Keys need to be replaced as often as once a year. If you find that your fob doesn’t have the range that it once did, it’s probably due to a low battery. A low battery can also cause fobs to function inconsistently, requiring you to push buttons several times in order to lock or unlock your doors.
How To Make a Key Fob Battery Last Longer
One thing you should never do is leave your key fob in your car overnight. Whenever the fob is in range of your vehicle, it connects with your car’s sensor system. Not only can this drain the battery in your remote, it can potentially kill your car battery too. For this reason, it’s a good idea to always store a key fob at least ten feet away from your vehicle.
