Battery Type

Disposable – Disposable batteries, either alkaline or lithium, have long storage life and offer longer run times. Their operating costs are considerably higher than rechargeable lights and are seldom as bright.

Rechargeable – Rechargeable batteries using nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH) or lithium ion batteries features lower operating expenses than disposable while being better suited for frequent use.

Commonly Used Lighting Terms

Light Output – Measured in Lumens and is the intensity of light coming out of the flashlight on the highest brightness setting.

Peak Beam Intensity – Measures the brightest part of the beam. The value is reported in candela and does not change with distance.

Beam Distance – Measured in meters. This is how far the light will shine before the brightness diminishes.

Runtime – Measured in hours. Runtime is the amount of time it takes the light output to drop to 10% of the rated output, rounded to the nearest quarter hour.

Water resistance (IPX Rating) – Water resistance is stated using the IP rating system, and three ratings are used:

  • IPX4 - Water-resistant, or water splashed from all directions
  • IPX7 - Water-proof, or temporary submersion at 1 meter for 30 minutes
  • IPX8 - Submersible, or continuous submersion at some specified depth for 4 hours

Impact Resistance – Measured in meters. Lights are tested by dropping them 6 times onto concrete at the rated distance.
