Maximize Your Apple Watch Battery Lifespan

You depend on your Apple Watch to be your trusty sidekick. It tells you the time, monitors your health, sends you notifications, tracks your sleep, and more. So, what is the rated lifespan of your sidekick's "ticker" before it needs replacement? Your Apple Watch battery is designed to last between two and three years before needing a replacement. Depending on usage and battery maintenance, this timeframe can vary substantially. Here are a few simple steps you can take to maximize your Apple Watch's battery lifespan.

1. Use an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Charger

To ensure you receive the proper functionality and charge you should always use an OEM or Apple certified charger. An essential feature of your charger is that it will stop charging when the battery reaches 100%, which is vital for Lithium Polymer batteries as they can be damaged and potentially become dangerous by overcharging. OEM charges will also deliver a consistent amperage giving you peak charge times.

2. Do Not Allow Your Battery to Fully Deplete

When you notice your battery is low, plug it in as soon as possible. If you consistently allow your battery to discharge past its depth of discharge, over time your battery will degrade and won’t hold it's charge.

3. Don't Leave Your Battery Depleted for Long Periods of Time

When Apple Watch batteries are left dead for long periods of time they risk entering a state of discharge. This will make it difficult for the battery to hold a charge in the future.

4. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Like many batteries, the Apple Watch battery shouldn't be exposed to extreme heat or cold. Temperatures reaching over 95° F (35° C) can permanently damage the battery by decreasing it's capacity. Colder temperatures may temporarily decrease your battery's performance. The Apple Watch battery's comfort zone lies between 62° to 72° F (16° to 22° C).

How long does the battery last on the Apple Watch?

Your Apple Watch should give you approximately 18 hours of charge depending on usage. If you find that your Apple watch is dying more quickly, you likely need a new battery.
