Spring Cleaning

Power - by Jessica Carey - updated on 4/5/2013

As you begin the daunting task of cleaning out your closets, drawers and cabinets, add one more item to the list. Clean your batteries.

Why and How?

Corrosion, dirt and moisture will build up on the terminals or contacts and drain power. This will reduce the efficiency of energy transfer and eventually cause the battery to die. To help you get started, we've created a "how-to" guide for some of the most commonly-used batteries.

Car, Marine or Powersport Batteries

  • To eliminate the corrosive buildup on your automotive battery terminals, scrub them clean using a terminal post and clamp brush and battery cleaner.
  • Make sure vent caps are tight to prevent the cleaner from entering the cells. Wipe them off with a wet towel and dry with another towel. Once the terminals have completely dried, you can apply a bit of anti-corrosion spray around each terminal to deter future corrosive buildup.

Stop into your local Batteries Plus and our service professionals will not only help you clean your terminals, but will give you cost-effective, and easy-to-use products to keep your battery running at peak performance. We have cleaners, protectors, brushes, rings, terminal replacements and more.

Laptop and Cell Phone Batteries

Clean your battery's metal contacts every couple of months with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol. This keeps the transfer of power from your battery more efficient. Over time, contacts may accumulate dirt which reduce the efficiency of energy transfer. Make sure to clean the battery contacts of the battery on your phone or laptop.

Common Household Batteries

Keep battery contact surfaces and battery compartment contacts clean by rubbing them with a clean pencil eraser or a rough cloth each time you replace batteries. This practice can be used on cordless phone batteries, remote control batteries and more.
