The Importance of Car Battery Chargers

Power - by Jessica Carey - updated on 1/25/2013

If you understand why car batteries fail, then you should also understand the importance of charging your car battery. On average, most batteries do not require a recharge for at least five years. That's if you're taking good care of your car. But if you want to ensure a long car battery life, you'll benefit from routine charging.

Why

A car's alternator is not designed to fully restore a depleted battery, but rather to maintain a healthy one. It is important to routinely charge car batteries that are used sporadically – like in a car driven only for short distances. However, whether your car sits outside or is in use every day, you can use a battery charger to keep it starting easily.

Most chargers are designed to diagnose, recover, charge and maintain a wide range of batteries, in a wide range of applications. Some trickle chargers can be left on a battery indefinitely. These would be used on a vehicle that is not used all the time or is stored away for the winter or the summer.

How

At Batteries Plus, you'll find chargers from leading manufacturers like Battery Tender, DieHard and NOCO Genius®. Choose from a full selection of car battery chargers for everything from vintage 8V model vehicles to dual battery 24V systems and multi-battery, fleet operations.

Once you have your charger, hook it up and the power will trickle in as it's needed. The battery won't be overcharged. A trickle charger is designed to be left on a car for a long period of time to recharge the battery. It slowly adds the charge to the battery and does not allow for the normal depletion of charge that batteries commonly have. Give it a full charge for a day or two.
