Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 1st. As you get ready to set all of your clocks back an hour, why not take the time to replace any dead batteries or spent bulbs around your home? This checklist will help you get ready for the changing season by checking the batteries in your smoke detector, updating emergency supplies and swapping out old light bulbs.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

It’s recommended that you check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors every six months. Daylight Savings offers a perfect opportunity to test them all to make sure they’re working properly, since you’re already adjusting all of your clocks.

Most smoke and carbon monoxide detectors run on 9-volt batteries, although some also run on AA or AAA batteries. Your local Batteries Plus Bulbs has plenty of alkaline batteries from trusted brands like Duracell and Energizer. If you’re looking for a longer-lasting battery option though, consider switching to lithium. Lithium batteries offer a number of advantages over alkalines. Most importantly, lithium batteries last much longer than alkaline batteries. Our UltraLife 9-volt lithium battery can last up to ten years in your smoke detector, which saves you both money and the hassle of having to constantly replace it. We also have plenty of other lithium battery options too.

Need to replace an old smoke or carbon monoxide detector that’s no longer working properly? Shop our selection of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to fit any need or price range.

Emergency Kits

Fall is also a great time to check the supplies in your emergency prep kit. Be sure to test the batteries in flashlights to make sure they’re still working. What about backup batteries? Do you have an adequate supply of alkaline batteries on hand for radios, flashlights and other accessories?

Don’t have an emergency kit? No problem. Find out more about what you need to make one. At the very least, you’ll want to have some reliable flashlights in your house in case of a power outage. The NEBO Redline V is a great handheld option with 5 different light modes and a light output of 500 lumens. The NEBO Poppy is another great option. This combination tool can be used as either a lantern or flashlight and has two separate light modes.

Light bulbs

Now’s the perfect time to change out those spent light bulbs you’re always putting off. We have light bulbs to fit any fixture. While you’re shopping, consider making the switch to energy-efficient LED light bulbs. LEDs consume roughly 80% less energy than old school incandescent bulbs and can last as long as 20 years before they need to be replaced.

Also, be sure to check out our selection of smart light bulbs. Smart bulbs are perfect for the dark days of winter, allowing you come home to a well-lit house. They can be controlled remotely via an app on your phone, or programmed to turn on and off according to a set schedule. There are even color-changing bulbs that allow you to alter the color of light for holiday parties or to create a variety of different moods.
